On Wednesday December 12th 2025, it was announced that India’s festival of lights, Diwali, would be added to UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list.
UNESCO Cultural Heritage Nominations Reviewed in New Delhi
The United Nations cultural body is convening in New Delhi from Tuesday to Thursday. It is reviewing numerous nominations from 78 countries. Newly selected items will be added to UNESCO’s cultural heritage list, aimed at promoting diversity awareness and ensuring future protection.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi endorsed the announcement, noting the festival’s deep ties to Indian culture. He stated, “It embodies our civilization’s essence, symbolizing enlightenment and integrity.” Through social media, he mentioned that this recognition will enhance the festival’s global appeal.
The Delhi government plans multiple events, including illuminating buildings, decorating major roads, and hosting a grand lamp-lighting ceremony.
