Luxembourg Workers get Day Off to Compensate for Holiday Clash

Luxembourg workers are set to benefit from a compensatory holiday this year, after parliament approved that an extra day’s annual leave will be granted to employees as compensation for two public holidays that fall on the same day in May.

Europe Day and Ascension Day, which are both public holidays in Luxembourg, will be both be observed on Thursday May 9th 2024.

Employees who find themselves working on the day will be given a day in lieu, as well as payment at Sunday rates, according to the law passed by the Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday January 16th.

Thise workers who are due to be off on May 9th will be given an additional day’s leave, to be taken within three months, the legislation states.
