Pakistan to enjoy a five-day break for Eidul Azha and National Day

Pakistan’s Minister for Science and Technology Chaudhry Fawad Hussain has announced that Eidul Azha will fall on Monday August 12th.

This will create a break of five days for most workers as two days of public holidays for Eidul Azha will be followed by a public holiday for Independence Day on Wednesday August 14th.

Hussain made the announcement during a press conference to highlight the initiative to produce a lunar calendar that would establish dates up to five years in advance. The aim is to encourage the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to adopt it as first-ever joint calendar of the Islamic world.

Eidul Azha is the Feast of Sacrifice, and is the most important feast of the Muslim calendar. It falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the twelfth and final month in the Islamic calendar.

Pakistani Independence Day is the country’s national day. It marks the anniversary of the day in 1947, on which Pakistan became the world’s first Islamic republic when it gained independence from British rule.
