Indian Bank Holidays in January 2022

Indian public and private banks will be closed on 16 days including the second and fourth Saturdays and Sundays in January 2022, owing to festivals.

According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, banks remain closed on all public holidays but there are some holidays that are regional, i.e. restricted to certain states only. Regional holidays are decided by respective state governments.

  6. January 11: Missionary Day (Mizoram)
  7. January 12: Birthday of Swami Vivekananda
  8. January 14: Makar Sankranti/Pongal (Many states)
  9. January 15: Makar Sankranti Festival/Pongal/Thiruvalluvar Day (Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu)
  10. January 16: Sunday
  11. January 18: Thai Poosam (Chennai)
  12. January 22: Fourth Saturday
  13. January 23: Sunday
  14. January 26: Republic Day (Nationwide)
  15. January 30: Sunday
  16. January 31: Me-Dam-Me-Phi (Assam)

The Reserve Bank of India grants holidays to the bank under three categories that include Banks’ Closing of Accounts, Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act, Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act, and Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday.
