A month or so earlier than normal, the Chinese government has announced the public holidays for next year.
On October 26th 2021, the State Council released the official China public holiday 2022 schedule through its Circular of the General Office of the State Council on the Arrangement of Public Holidays in 2022
As is traditional, the holiday schedule features two major week-long holidays: Spring Festival (also known as Chinese New Year) and the National Day holiday (often referred to as ‘Golden Week’).
Note that the start of the Beijing Winter Olympics will coincide with the Lunar New Year break.
Foreign human resource managers should note that Saturdays and Sundays are often marked as additional official workdays on weekends in China to compensate for long holiday breaks.
For example, in 2022, Saturday January 29th, and Sunday January 30th are designated as official workdays to partially offset the seven days of holidays for Spring Festival.
Private companies in China, however, have the right to determine their own schedules – that is, allow for additional days off – including the adjusted days – as long as the official holiday calendar is maintained.
