Spain’s Basque Country announces public holidays for 2022

The Basque Government has included September 6th among its holidays for 2022, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the return of Elcano.

The Basque Country has approved the working calendar for next year and the one-off holiday on September 6th will replace December 25th, which falls on a Sunday.

The twelve holidays in the work calendar for the Basque Country in 2022 will be: January 1 (New Year), January 6 (Three Kings), April 14th (Holy Thursday), 15th (Good Friday) and 18th (Easter Monday), July 25th (St. James’ Day), August 15th (Assumption), September 6th (Elcano Day), October 12th (National Holiday), November 1st (All Saints), December 6th (Constitution Day) and December 8th (Immaculate Conception).

Two more holidays will be added to these days, which will be decreed by local town halls and councils.

The Basque Executive has included September 6th among its 14 holidays for the year 2022, a day that commemorates the fifth centenary of the first round the world voyage led by the Basque sailor, Juan Sebastián Elcano. This date will replace December 25th, which, falling on a Sunday, was already a non-working day.
