In a statement issued by the Egyptian Cabinet, it has been announced that Thursday August 20th 2020 will be a public holiday to mark the new Islamic Hijri year 1442.
According to the statement, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has issued a decree setting Thursday (the first day of the Islamic month of Muharram) as a paid holiday for all employees in ministries, state institutions, and public enterprise companies.
Islamic New Year represents the starting point of the Muslim era as it coincides with the Hijrah, the Prophet’s journey from Mecca to Medina on the first of Muharram in 622 CE.
