UAE announces date for Islamic New Year

The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources of the United Arab Emirates has announced that Sunday August 23rd, will be a public holiday for the federal government marking the Islamic New Year.

Public sector employees will enjoy a long weekend to mark Al Hijri, the Islamic New Year, with work resuming on Monday August 24th.

An announcement for the private sector is yet to be made but is expected to be the same, as the UAE government unified public holidays for both sectors last year.

Islamic New Year represents the starting point of the Muslim era as it coincides with the Hijrah, the Prophet’s journey from Mecca to Medina on the first of Muharram in 622 CE.
