Ghana declares a Public Holiday on August 4 for Founders’ Day

The Government of Ghana has declared Tuesday August 4th 2020 a statutory Public Holiday to mark this year’s Founders’ Day celebration.

This was highlighted in a statement signed by the Minister for Interior, Hon. Ambrose Dery on Tuesday July 28th 2020.

“The general public is hereby reminded that Tuesday, August 4, 2020 which marks Founders’ Day is a statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”

The statement further urged all Ghanaians to adhere to all the COVID-19 safety protocols particularly in relation to outdoor activities.

“The general public is advised to observe the safety protocols associated with the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19), especially in relation to social events at public places.”

August 4th has been chosen as the date for Founders’ Day as it marks two important events in Ghana’s history. It is the date for the formation of the Aborigines’ Rights Protection Society by John Mensah Sarbah in 1897, and the formation of the United Gold Coast Convention in 1947 by J.B. Danquah and George Alfred “Paa” Grant.
