Singapore announces Public Holidays dates for 2021

The Ministry of Manpower has announced the gazetted public holidays for Singapore in 2021. According to the release, there will be 11 gazetted public holidays in Singapore next year.

There will be four long weekends in 2021, compared to seven long weekends in 2020. The long weekends are for New Year’s Day, Chinese New Year, Good Friday and National Day.

The second Day of Chinese New Year (February 13th), Labour Day (May 1st) and Christmas Day (December 25th) fall on a Saturday in 2021 and therefore are not compensated by a public holiday on a weekday.

It’s not all bad news with the three Saturdays. In accordance with the Employment Act, if a public holiday falls on a non-working day, you are entitled to another day off OR an extra day’s salary in lieu of the public holiday at the gross rate of pay.

If you use your holiday allowance on some Fridays, you can create two four-day weekends in May and November, as Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali, both fall on a Thursday, so book Friday May 14th and Friday November 5th now as they are sure to be popular days to take off.

As always, remember that the dates for Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji are still subject to change.
