The South Korean government has designated Monday August 17th 2020 as a one-off national holiday, allowing workers in the nation to enjoy a three-day weekend as a compensation for the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
Even though Liberation Day falls on Saturday August 15th in 2020, it would not have been compensated with a public holiday on the following Monday, unlike Seollal, Chuseok or Children’s Day.
President Moon Jae-in said the additional holiday was intended to give a “short but precious rest time” to people who have been battling the virus for most of the year.
“I hope that it will serve as a small comfort to the people who are enduring inconveniences for the safety of everyone,” the president added.
