Philippines declares May 25 as regular holiday for Eid’l Fitr

President Rodrigo Duterte has declared Monday May 25th as a regular holiday for the observance of Eid’l Fitr or the culmination of the Fasting of Ramadan.

Duterte signed Proclamation No. 944 after the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) recommended to declare the date a national holiday.

“In order to bring the religious and cultural significance of Eid’l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness, it is necessary to declare Monday, May 25th 2020, a regular holiday throughout the country,” the proclamation read.

For Filipino Muslims, Eid’l Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. It’s a joyful holiday when the faithful celebrate 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting.

Eid’l Fitr has been a public holiday in Philippines since 2002.
