Happy New Year! Monday December 30th has been declared as a special public holiday by the Thai government.

Government spokeswoman Narumon Pinyosinwat announced the decision after the regular cabinet meeting on Tuesday October 29th.

The announcement extends the holidays to mark New Year to five, from Saturday December 28th 2019 to Wednesday January 1st 2020.

In announcing the Cabinet holiday resolution, Government speaker Naruemon Phinyosinnawat noted that the purpose of the public holiday is to help drive the economy and supporting businesses related to tourism during the New Year holidays.

Clarifying the holiday, Bussaya Chaipeum, Chief of the Phuket Public Relations Office, explained “state enterprises, financial institutions and private businesses can decide for themselves whether to give their staff the day off as long as they comply with labour law, but government officials must take the day off on December 30th.”

The Bank of Thailand is currently mulling over whether they will observe December 30th as a bank holiday as well.
