Eid-al-Adha: The Gambia declares Monday a public holiday

President of The Gambia, Adama Barrow, has declared Monday August 12th 2019 a public holiday throughout the country.

In a tweet, the Office of the President said “The Public is hereby informed that the President of the Republic, His Excellency Adama Barrow, acting under Section 76 (1) of the 1997 Constitution of The Gambia, is pleased to declare Monday, 12th August 2019 a Public Holiday throughout The Gambia. in honour of the Muslim feast of Eid-al-Adha.”

A second tweet added, “On behalf of the First Family and the government, the president would like to wish the entire Muslim Ummah a joyous and blessed Eid celebration.”

Eid al Adha or the Feast of Holy Sacrifice is known as Tobaski in the Gambia. It is one the most important events celebrated in the Islamic religion. It commemorates the sacrifice of Abraham, and follows the Haj pilgrimage to Mecca.

It is celebrated on the tenth day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the lunar year in the Islamic calendar.
